Ever since I read this post on Cupcakes and Cashmere, I’d been obsessing about doing my own DIY version. My husband is English and loves his traditional ales so we always have a supply of empty beer bottles. Instead of paint, I used permanent spray paint. I had a can of white leftover from a previous project and also picked up a can of pastel yellow and pink.
Patience is definitely not one of my virtues, so of course the day I allotted to doing this, the heavens opened up and it poured intermittently all day long. Luckily, the very next day there wasn’t a cloud in sight so I set up shop on our balcony. I learned the hard way that if you spray too much paint, it will start to drip down the bottle. By the end, I had mastered the technique. The best way to achieve even coverage is to spray many thin layers, waiting for each layer to dry before applying the next. I takes a while, but the even finish that you achieve is worth the wait.
I chose a bunch of bright yellow daffodils to fill the bottles and these created a pretty centrepiece on our kitchen table.
