If you’re heading south east of Bern via train towards Interlaken, your first stop will usually be Thun (unless you caught the slow train). Located only twenty minutes from Bern, Thun is situated on the River Aare at the site where the river flows out of Lake Thun. On a clear day, you can see the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains, a truly awesome sight. On my many journeys to and from Interlaken my train had stopped at Thun. I’d not really thought much about getting off the train at Thun to see what the city was all about, but on the 6th of February I wasn’t in the mood for a long train ride. Thun, being only twenty minutes away, seemed like a good destination.
The weather that day was gorgeous. There were only a few clouds in the sky so I was able to view and capture the surrounding mountains. I ate my lunch overlooking the river, the water was so clear I could see schools of fish slowly making their way up the river.
Thun is a very charming city with it’s hill top castle and old town cobblestone streets. If you have a chance to jump off your train and check it out for a few hours, I definitely recommend you do so.
